This exciting school trip in Kenya combines a service learning project with outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities and a challenging trek to ascend Mount Kenya, Africa's second-highest peak.

The adventure begins in Nairobi where students visit the herds of inquisitive Rothschild giraffe that wander the grounds of the famous Giraffe Manor. From Nairobi we travel by private vehicle to a village primary school where we'll spend three days working alongside local teachers and tradesmen to refurbish classrooms. From here we then set off on a fully supported 6-day camping adventure to summit Kenya's highest peak, the majestic Mt Kenya (4985m). Home to diverse wildlife and fewer trekkers than Kilimanjaro, trekking on Mt Kenya offers an exhilarating climb without the crowds. The Chogoria/Sirimon Route offers the best combination of alpine scenery and acclimatisation as we traverse the mountain via Point Lenana at 4985m. After completing the trek, students return to the plains to view the incredible wild game and bird life of the remote Samburu Nature Reserve.

Learning outcomes for students

A World Youth Adventure Journey is a unique learning experience. Students will come away from the journey with a greater knowledge of what it takes to be a true global citizen and how they can first hand help encourage positive change. Our journeys are designed to encourage thriving and positive youth development through the act of service and selflessness and to enhance the following life skills that will help you grow as an individual:
• first hand experience in making a sustainable grass-roots contribution to an under privileged community; investing time and physical effort
• the satisfaction of reaching fundraising goals and raising money for a worthy community project,
• an appreciation and tolerance of other cultures and a broader mind
• the confidence to lead a group and make decisions
• the skills of managing a project, setting and meeting objectives
• the value of working together as a cohesive team to achieve a common objective
• the ability to face mental and physical challenges
• the ability to adapt to new environments outside of their 'comfort zone'
• to appreciate and care for the natural environment. The environments we trek through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers and also the people of their host community
• basic bush skills obtained on a 3-4 day trek such as personal hygiene, pitching a tent, helping to prepare meals,
• a certificate for completing the community project as well as before and after photos,
• a plaque will be erected at the site if the community projects, naming their school and year the project was completed.
Importantly our adventures help increase general well-being and build resilience in young men and women to help them deal with adverse situations in life.

Grading

Moderate to Challenging

Mount Kenya Ascent is graded moderate to challenging and is considered to be one of the more demanding treks in East Africa, suitable for experienced and fit walkers only. Undoubtedly the altitude is a factor in determining the challenging grade of the trip, however, the terrain you will be required to ascend and descend through is sometimes difficult to negotiate at times, with some rock scrambling and long ascents. This trip has been designed to achieve the best possible acclimatisation in the time frame. As with all our Challenging programs, we expect people to be regular outdoors people, enjoying aerobic sport around four or five times a week over some period of time. Preferably this has been a long term interest but if not, you have set a program of fitness preparation with at least three months lead in time to your trip. The fitter you are for your trip, the more of a holiday it will be. Activities as close to the actual activity on your trip are the best training; in this instance walking and climbing, with and without a pack. This builds leg strength, aerobic capacity and confidence in your ability to travel comfortably with a pack for extended periods. Whilst this ascent of Mt Kenya is not a technical climb, it is nevertheless a short and steep trek at altitude in possibly adverse weather conditions, and for many people it will be the hardest physical walk of their life. Come and talk to us if you are unsure about your suitability for the Mt Kenya Ascent..
