Australia is a nation blessed with outstanding natural beauty. From its rugged interior to its pristine coastlines. World Youth Adventures is excited to welcome you to Sydney with this exciting experiential journey that will see embark on a voyage of discovery and learning on many levels. On this adventure the students can expect to learn about the Australian indigenous people, the oldest surviving culture on the planet. They will also learn about the Australian bush in the UNESCO listed Blue Mountains and help a local charity to maintain its natural beauty and learn of the threats it faces today from climate change and other man made events. Students will also embark on some self discovery with activities designed to bring about personal growth and a new found respect for their peers through shared experience. To top it all off we have a night in Sydney where students will be able to visit the world famous Sydney Harbour before returning home.

Starting Point:

From Sydney International airport - from 30 students

Welcome to Sydney! Your World Youth Adventures representative will be at Sydney Airport to meet you in the arrivals hall and will show you to your waiting coaches. From the airport we will head straight to a wildlife park, a small local park in Sydney's West that is home to many of Australia famous furry residents. From here we will then continue into the UNESCO world heritage listed Blue Mountains to the town of Katoomba, our home for the next 4 nights. It's been a long trip to get here so we have a chilled afternoon planned for you with a welcome briefing followed by an Australian movie.

Meals:  L,D

This morning we will be formally welcomed to this area by a member of the local indigenous community, the Gandangara people, in what is known as the "Welcome to Country". This is an ancient ceremony in which the hosting group would welcome the visitors, offering them safe passage and protection of their spiritual being during the journey. Following this the group will be separated into smaller groups and will rotate through a number of activities for the remainder of the day that relate to indigenous culture, environmental education and conservation in the Australian context.

Meals:  B,L,D

The full day of hiking will be take us directly from our centrally located accommodation on to Narrow Neck plateau where we'll be able to enjoy vast vistas across Megalong Valley to one side and Jamison Valley to the other. We'll descend the Golden Stairs onto Federal Pass and begin our walk towards the famous Three Sisters rock formation that the Blue Mountains is renowned for. This walk will take us through lush green shrouded forests beneath towering escarpments. Throughout the hike our guides will share with you their knowledge of the plant and animal species that we'll see along our adventure. If we are lucky we may hear a lyrebird or two with their unique ability to mimic other birds. Once we have ascended the trail up to the top of the escarpment we'll then enjoy the rewarding views as we look back towards where we began our hiking adventure. The days' hike concludes with an easy section as we head back to our accommodation. (<10km).

Meals:  B,L,D

For our abseiling adventure we'll be returning to Narrow Neck plateau. Abseiling, or rappelling as it is known in North America and much of Europe, is commonly practiced the world over as a method of descending a rope in a safe and controlled manner. No prior experience is necessary as our guides will be providing all the instruction necessary to enjoy this thrilling activity. We'll start you off on a small starter cliff (3 metres) before we progress to the 15 metres with its epic views.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning we depart Katoomba and head to Sydney where we will spend the afternoon exploring the area around Sydney Harbour, today you will learn about Sydney's pre-colonial and colonial history and how it has become the modern city it is today!

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning you will be transferred to the Sydney International Airport for your journey home. We hope you have thoroughly enjoyed your time in Australia.

Learning outcomes for students

A World Youth Adventures' experience gives students the opportunity to become informed, engaged and active global citizens, through their active participation in:
• Sustainable grass-roots community development projects that have them working collaboratively with members of the community;
• Authentic interactions with new cultures, customs and traditions;
• Activities that enable them to lead their peers and also contribute as a team member to a common objective;
• Activities that take them outside of their comfort zone, to face mental and physical challenges;
• Initiatives that teach them that their individual actions collectively can make a difference, and that they have a role to play in making the world a better place.
You are embarking on an adventure to places and among people whose lives are very different from your own. Many aspects of life in this region will seem unusual. Remember that these are often the very same aspects that make a destination interesting and attractive. In addition to the personal physical challenges you may face, travel conditions can present unexpected obstacles, such as rough and bumpy roads and changeable weather. To prepare for this, “pack” a flexible and relaxed attitude. If you travel with a spirit of adventure and inquiry, a healthy sense of humour and a willingness to encounter the unexpected and you will have the adventure of a lifetime!
We invite you to read and put into practice on your travels this IIPT Credo of the Peaceful Traveller -
Grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience the world, and because peace begins with the individual, I affirm my personal responsibility and commitment to:
> Journey with an open mind and gentle heart
> Accept with grace and gratitude the diversity I encounter
> Revere and protect the natural environment which sustains all life
> Appreciate all cultures I discover
> Respect and thank my hosts for their welcome
> Offer my hand in friendship to everyone I meet
> Support travel services that share these views and act upon them and,
> By my spirit, words and actions, encourage others to travel the world in peace
