After an early breakfast, we take a flight from Kota Kinabalu city to Sandakan. Upon arrival we visit the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC), founded in Sabah, Malaysia in 2008. The purpose of the BSBCC, is a two-stage effort to provide for the care, rehabilitation and release of orphaned and captive sun bears, as well as address the lack of knowledge and awareness of this little-known bear both in Malaysia and internationally. The Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), found only in south-east Asia, is the world’s smallest bear species. Volunteers will be working with our groups of rescued bears. The enclosures are very natural and have large rocky outcrops, native fauna, climbing frames and platforms, pools and other enrichment’s. It is a safe and happy home to bears that have been rescued from a range of different situations including poachers, the black market, the bile farm industry and businesses using them for entertainment and trades which often leave behind very young orphaned cubs. Learning outcomes for students

A World Youth Adventures' experience gives students the opportunity to become informed, engaged and active global citizens, through their active participation in:
• Sustainable grass-roots community development projects that have them working collaboratively with members of the community;
• Authentic interactions with new cultures, customs and traditions;
• Activities that enable them to lead their peers and also contribute as a team member to a common objective;
• Activities that take them outside of their comfort zone, to face mental and physical challenges;
• Initiatives that teach them that their individual actions collectively can make a difference, and that they have a role to play in making the world a better place.
You are embarking on an adventure to places and among people whose lives are very different from your own. Many aspects of life in this region will seem unusual. Remember that these are often the very same aspects that make a destination interesting and attractive. In addition to the personal physical challenges you may face, travel conditions can present unexpected obstacles, such as rough and bumpy roads and changeable weather. To prepare for this, “pack” a flexible and relaxed attitude. If you travel with a spirit of adventure and inquiry, a healthy sense of humour and a willingness to encounter the unexpected and you will have the adventure of a lifetime!
We invite you to read and put into practice on your travels this International Institute of Peace (www.iipt.org) Credo of the Peaceful Traveller -
Grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience the world, and because peace begins with the individual, I affirm my personal responsibility and commitment to:
> Journey with an open mind and gentle heart
> Accept with grace and gratitude the diversity I encounter
> Revere and protect the natural environment which sustains all life
> Appreciate all cultures I discover
> Respect and thank my hosts for their welcome
> Offer my hand in friendship to everyone I meet
> Support travel services that share these views and act upon them and,
> By my spirit, words and actions, encourage others to travel the world in peace
