For a trans-formative experience for youth in their formative years, there is simply no other destination like Nepal. Upon arrival in Kathmandu we explore the atmospheric squares and temples of Kathmandu Valley, taking a half day guided sightseeing tour of the most significant places for the Hindu and Buddhist religions. We drive 2 hours north of Kathmandu to the Shivapuri district and hike four hours into the village of Thaprek, where we spend the next four days installing a bio gas oven (perhaps two depending on group size) to bring methane gas into the kitchen of 1 or 2 families. The bio gas oven brings a clean and efficient cooking fuel to the beneficiary and also protects the surrounding environment from deforestation. During the service work students will apply mathematics and science, they will work as a team, collaborating with their fellow students and the local community, they will be taken outside of their comfort zone to build resilience and independence and return home to South Korea with an authentic insight into rural subsistence lifestyle in Nepal.

Learning outcomes for students

A World Youth Adventures' experience gives students the opportunity to become informed, engaged and active global citizens, through their active participation in:
• Sustainable grass-roots community development projects that have them working collaboratively with members of the community;
• Authentic interactions with new cultures, customs and traditions;
• Activities that enable them to lead their peers and also contribute as a team member to a common objective;
• Activities that take them outside of their comfort zone, to face mental and physical challenges;
• Initiatives that teach them that their individual actions collectively can make a difference, and that they have a role to play in making the world a better place.
You are embarking on an adventure to places and among people whose lives are very different from your own. Many aspects of life in this region will seem unusual. Remember that these are often the very same aspects that make a destination interesting and attractive. In addition to the personal physical challenges you may face, travel conditions can present unexpected obstacles, such as rough and bumpy roads and changeable weather. To prepare for this, “pack” a flexible and relaxed attitude. If you travel with a spirit of adventure and inquiry, a healthy sense of humour and a willingness to encounter the unexpected and you will have the adventure of a lifetime!
We invite you to read and put into practice on your travels this IIPT Credo of the Peaceful Traveller -
Grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience the world, and because peace begins with the individual, I affirm my personal responsibility and commitment to:
> Journey with an open mind and gentle heart
> Accept with grace and gratitude the diversity I encounter
> Revere and protect the natural environment which sustains all life
> Appreciate all cultures I discover
> Respect and thank my hosts for their welcome
> Offer my hand in friendship to everyone I meet
> Support travel services that share these views and act upon them and,
> By my spirit, words and actions, encourage others to travel the world in peace
DISCONNECT FROM YOUR DEVICE & CONNECT WITH CULTURE AND NATURE.
If you are embarking on a travel experience with World Youth Adventures you have been afforded the opportunity to learn important values of teamwork, to build self-confidence and to develop an understanding of other cultures and ways of doing things. It‘s likely that you’re travelling to a destination for the first time and you will be taking part in new and different activities. It’s an opportunity to make life-long friendships with your travel companions, to learn new skills and understand yourself better. To maximize the benefits of this travel experience, to connect with people and places, it is best free to be fully in the moment, engaging in the activities on offer. For this reason, World Youth Adventures strongly advises against the use of mobile phones during the travel experience.
When phones are down, your eyes are up, freeing you to look around, to be open to receiving information from all senses, to fully engage in the travel experience, and to maximize the potential for learning and growth. It also allows you to be in tune with your own thoughts and responses in a way that is not possible when you are beholden to the phone.
Being self-reliant and overcoming challenges you encounter when you’re away from our usual support systems, builds resilience. Step away from online communication and allow yourself the space to grow in confidence and build independence. Your school will make arrangements to keep your parents informed about necessary information when you’re away from them. Taking a break from online communication is a rare privilege in this day and age, the perfect opportunity to experience time without the pressure of constant online communication.
