On arrival in Hobart we will be met by our local experienced World Expeditions guide and have a full trip and safety briefing. This afternoon we will travel to the world famous MONNA set alongside the Derwent River. Everything from the setting of the architecture to the artwork is special at MONA and demands your attention and insight. With rolling world class exhibitions MONA is sure to encourage discussion surrounding many topics. We then transfer to our accommodation for the night at the wonderful Lea Scout Bunkhouse set in wilderness surrounds.

Meals:  L,D

This morning we rise for breakfast and after clean up head to the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, a small social enterprise that works tirelessly to protect animals that went extinct in other parts of Australia long ago. Among them are four marsupials that can only be found in Tasmania and nowhere else in the world - the Tasmanian devil, the eastern quoll, the Tasmanian pademelon and the Tasmanian bettong. We have the chance to get up close to some of Tasmania's much-loved locals and endangered animals. Bonorong operates Tasmania's largest 24-hour wildlife rescue service and we will join in a workshop to see behind the scenes the fantastic work being done to help and provide safety and care to injured wildlife. We break for lunch and head to the rugged sea cliffs of the Tasman and Forester Peninsulas. Here we can explore the spectacular Tasman Arch, Devils Kitchen and the famous Tessellated pavements. We then continue to Port Arthur where we spend the night. Overnight Port Arthur NRMA Park

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we will spend our time in the Port Arthur area on the Tasman Peninsula. We will head back in time and explore the Port Arthur historical site on foot with access to more than 30 historic buildings, ruins, restored houses, heritage gardens and walking trails. UNESCO have described the former convict settlement as one of "the best surviving examples of large-scale convict transportation and the colonial expansion of European powers through the presence and labour of convicts." This afternoon we are in for a special time. We drive North to Triabunna and the Maria Island ferry terminal. We take a 30 minute ferry trip across Mercury Passage, docking at Darlington on Maria Island. Maria Island is one of Tasmania’s least visited yet most wonderful locations – you will be completely captivated from the moment you step ashore. The island has a rich history from Aboriginal habitation, to a convict penal station, farming, and the National Park it is today. The island is full of furry animals that like to explore you as well as their surroundings! There are no vehicles apart from the rangers vehicles and very few natural predators so the animals roam free and are not scared of visitors, so it’s a real highlight. On arrival we will walk the short distance to our accommodation located at the Penitentiary. Overnight cabin accommodation Penitentiary dorms

Meals:  B,L,D

Over the next 2 days we will explore Maria Island and join a conservation program with local authorities. Our walks will include an exploration to the fossilised cliffs. Over 300 million years ago the cliffs were covered by the sea and a mass extinction of shelled marine life occurred here. There is now thousands of fossils embedded into the walls. It was reportedly one of the largest mass extinctions to have ever occurred anywhere in the world. We will also engage with our guides on an afternoon of conservation service learning. We will hands on learn about the local efforts for preserving the natural environment on Tasmania. Tonight we will all help with the food prep and cooking along with clean down after a delicious meal! Overnight cabin accommodation Penitentiary dorms

Meals:  B,L,D

After a delicious breakfast we head off from camp to explore this fascinating island. There are a number of loop trails we can try depending on weather. Our goal will be to walk to the summit of Bishop and Clerk (620m). Listen to the call of native birds as we climb steadily up through eucalypt forest, then out into scrub battered low by the elements. The view from this peak is incomparable as you gaze across the expanse of the island and out over the Tasman Sea. In the afternoon we can choose to walk back via the Reservoir Circuit Track. You may choose to spend the few hours before dinner soaking in the history of Darlington. Overnight cabin accommodation Penitentiary dorms

Meals:  B,L,D

As we wake to the now familiar bird and animal sounds we rise and prep breakfast before cleaning up our station and packing our bags for the journey on the ferry back to the mainland. We will be met by our vehicle and drive to the picturesque Friendly beaches, we will stay at one of the local Big 4 sites at nearby Coles Bay in cabins. We head to stunning Coles Bay, during which we will get our first glimpse of the areas brooding mountains which make up the Hazard range. This afternoon we will walk to a vantage point to see the magnificent view over Wineglass Bay. Late this afternoon we will return to our accommodation at Coles Bay for meal prep. Overnight cabins at Big 4

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we will learn all about the local indigenous culture. After breakfast we join the local NITA Education team, a Tasmanian Aboriginal Cultural group of educators. During our cultural awareness program we will learn about the culture, history and heritage of their people. Nita Education is creating awareness of how Aboriginal ancestors cared for Country and is inspiring students to discover more about sustainability. Tasmanian Aboriginal People have lived in Tasmania for over 42,500 years, for more than 2000 generations. Students will learn how their ancestors cared for the land, and in return it cared for them. Overnight cabins at Big 4

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we bid farewell to the stunning Freycinet beaches and turn inland, stopping along the way in the historic Campbell town. On arrival in Launceston we will visit the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and explore the exhibits before attending an exclusive viewing of OUR LIVING CLIMATE at the incredible planetarium. Our Living Climate looks at how Earth's climate has evolved over time alternating between periods of relative stability and sudden and dramatic change. If time allows we can explore some of the highlights of Launceston. Tonight we will stay at the beautifully located Gowrie Park Wilderness Village in cabin bunk accommodation. Overnight Gowrie Park Wilderness Village

Meals:  B,L,D

Departing our overnight accommodation, we first head to the Mole Creek Caves. We will have a private tour through one of the caves and learn all about the fascinating and uniquely fragile world of stalactites and stalagmites, sparkling crystals, reflection pools, delicate formations and colours. The climate inside the caves never changes, it's always 9 degrees year round, so dress warmly. After lunch we make our way by bus up to the stunning and iconic Cradle Mountain National Park. Overnight Waldheim Cabins

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we join an awe-inspiring walk around Dove Lake in the stunning Cradle Mountain National Park. The walk around Dove Lake is non technical and can be walked by anyone with a good fitness level. The walk is incredibly picturesque and gives us iconic views of the iconic Cradle Mountain. After our day of exploring we make our way back to our accommodation to enjoy a well-earned dinner. Overnight Waldheim Chalets

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning we rise early and prep for breakfast before enjoying our last morning together in Tasmania. This will be a great time for reflection and discussing our learnings whilst on the program as we drive back to Launceston. Once we know the time of the groups airport departure we may be able to introduce some stops on the journey such as Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm and Ashgrove Cheese Farm (They have local ice-cream!!) to wrap up our adventure. Fly to Melbourne

Learning outcomes for students

A World Expeditions Schools adventure is a unique learning experience. Our journeys are designed to encourage thriving and positive youth development along with leaving the communities and environments where we travel in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to enhance the following life skills that will help you grow as an individual:
• the confidence to lead a group and make decisions
• the value of working together as a cohesive team to achieve a common objective
• the ability to face mental and physical challenges
• the ability to adapt to new environments outside of their 'comfort zone'
• to appreciate and care for the natural environment. The environments we trek through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers and also the local peoples
• basic outdoor skills obtained on trek such as personal hygiene, helping to prepare meals
Importantly our adventures help increase general well-being and build resilience in young citizens to help them deal with adverse situations in life.
