Overview

 Highlights

  • 1.5 days of service at the Humåtak community in conjunction with the Centre for Island Sustainability at the University of Guam
  • Watch wild dolphins on a cruise
  • Feed tropical fish whilst snorkeling in calm waters
  • Experience Chamorro and Micronesian culture
  • Island sightseeing visiting museums, WWII battles sites and lookouts
  • Participate in Beach Clean-Up program

Building on the success of the 2016 and 2017 KIS Jeju Service Adventures to Guam, the 2019 departure will provide opportunities to learn about the traditional Chamorro culture and history, develop new skills, make new friends and learn through practical application how an island community is building resilience against the effects of climate change and taking action to address local environmental threats. This itinerary provides students with the opportunity to get up close and personal with the varied geographical land forms whilst also learning about the countries unique indigenous culture and more recent WWII history.

Partnering with the Centre for Island Sustainability at the University of Guam we work alongside a traditional coastal community called Humåtak which is located on a wide calm bay fringed with reefs and in the shadows of some of the island’s highest mountains. During our time at Humåtak we will receive lessons about the watershed and the needs and threats to coral, we will take a tour of the watershed from the mountain down to the sea, where students can see all the environmental connections in between and we will mould seed sling stones in order to help with watershed restorations efforts. This experience provides opportunity for cultural immersion and showcases how communities need to work together to protect the environment.

Learning outcomes for students

A World Expeditions Schools adventure is a unique learning experience. Our journeys are designed to encourage thriving and positive youth development along with leaving the communities and environments where we travel in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to enhance the following life skills that will help you grow as an individual:
• the confidence to lead a group and make decisions
• the value of working together as a cohesive team to achieve a common objective
• the ability to face mental and physical challenges
• the ability to adapt to new environments outside of their 'comfort zone'
• to appreciate and care for the natural environment. The environments we trek through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers and also the local peoples
• basic outdoor skills obtained on trek such as personal hygiene, pitching a tent, helping to prepare meals
Importantly our adventures help increase general well-being and build resilience in young men and women to help them deal with adverse situations in life.
