Trip Summary

The perfect combination of adventure, physical activities, game viewing and philanthropic pursuits. The expedition begins in Nairobi, that capital of Kenya. We make our way to the Samburu community and meet the village elders who teach you about their history. Meet the people of the village and experience the living culture through dance and song. We will participate in the life of the Samburu visiting the local school and also providing our aid in repairs and chores for the community. We will travel to Nakuru with game drives on the way and enjoy the views and pool for a break. We then reach the Massai village of Maji Moto to learn more about their culture and way of life. We'll spend a day at the Kikurukur primary school improving the experience of the students and learning from them as well. We'll head out to the Masai Mara Game Reserve in the afternoon for a great chance to see some big cats in this drier season. We much then say good bye to Africa and board our flights home from Nairobi.

Suitability

Overall this expedition has a grading of introductory.

The community project is also another physical component of the expedition. Although there is no trekking or climbing the restoration work being done around the school may be demanding. There may be load carrying, sweeping, painting, digging, all of which is tiring but character building!

Please speak to your teacher if you are unsure about your suitability for this expedition.

The Samburu live just north of the equator in the Rift Valley province of Northern Kenya. The Samburu community is closely related to the Maasai of East Africa. They speak a similar language, derived from Maa, which is called Samburu. The Samburu are semi-nomadic pastoralists. Cattle, as well as sheep, goats, and camels, are of utmost importance to the Samburu culture and way of life. The Samburu are extremely dependent on their animals for survival. After lunch and refreshments we embark for the village where you will visit the Samburu community. You will be welcomed by the village elders who will give you a brief history of their culture. This will be followed by visits to the black smith, fire making with sticks, cultural dance and songs. After breakfast start on a project at the local Kikurukur primary school. Maji Moto is a supporter of the school that is partly run by the local community and partly by the government. There are 3 classes at the school (nursery class, class 1 and class 2) and children ages are from 5 to 10 years old. There are about 60 children attending this school. In past years Maji Moto have supported the school with building the new classroom, updating the existing infrastructure, installing a water tank, fencing the school and supplying the school with basic educational materials. With planting indigenous trees on the school ground we would like to educate the small children about the importance of trees / forests. There is a big problem of deforestation in Kenya. The forests have been cut down for charcoal, fencing posts and building materials and no trees are replanted. Combined with the climate change, the landscape is becoming drier by the year which is affecting the daily lives of Maasai people who depend mostly on cattle. While at the school, we'll have the opportunity to share with the children a simple presentation on the importance of re-planting the trees and another topic of your choice before actually planting trees on the school grounds. We can also present to them any additional gifts for the students we have brought. At about noon, you bid your farewells to the staff and begin your journey back to the airport in Nairobi. It may just be a shock to your system after the harmony of the bush. You’ll climb the Great Rift Valley one final time, pausing for a photo stop if times allows. Upon arrival Nairobi you will be dropped at JKIA for your onward flight home.
