Trip Summary

This compact itinerary brings you the best of Northern Vietnam from the scenic landscapes and hill tribe villages of the Lao Chai province, to the colourful market streets of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. This trip takes in the must-see gems of the north but also steps off the well-worn path to gain a deeper appreciation of the region’s people, history and culture. From the colourful streets of Hanoi we take the overnight train to the former French hill station of Sapa in the north. Based out of Sapa we travel the short distance each day to reach the Lý Lao Ch?i Elementary School where over two and a hald days we will complete project work to renovate one of the classrooms in disrepair. We return to Hanoi by overnight train and transfer to the airport for the flight to South Korea.


Our service learning adventures can be undertaken by anyone with a reasonable level of health and fitness. For the community project part of your trip you will not require a certain level of strength or physical ability, just an enthusiastic and positive attitude. A project manager will direct and distribute the workloads among participants on a daily basis. There is no pressure to exert yourself physically beyond your limits during the project but you should be prepared to give 4 hours of physical labour each day.


Xin chao! Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam. You are greeted by your guide and driver at Noi Bai International airport for your transfer to the hotel. Please look for the WORLD YOUTH ADVENTURES welcome sign in the arrivals hall. Hanoi, one of Asia’s most enchanting cities, full of culture, history and the engaging contradictions of a rapidly developing and deeply traditional society. Late this afternoon, your tour guide will meet you at the hotel where a trip briefing will be held in the hotel lobby. In the evening, taste and enjoy Vietnamese food at a welcome dinner. Located on the outskirts of Hanoi, by the banks of the Red River, Bat Trang is a popular traditional handicraft village among tourists to Hanoi. Discover the small, secret alleys of the old parts of the village, visit local workshop, interact with local and craftsmen and observe the complete production procedure, starting from preparing the clay, shaping the items, drawing and putting them into the kiln. After exploring the village, you will spend time at a local ceramic workshop to try your hands on creating some ceramics. Returning to the city centre we visit the Temple of Literature, one of the most interesting shrines in Hanoi, built in 1070, the complex consists of five courtyards dedicated to Confucius and the pursuit of Confucian thought and behavior. It is here that Vietnam’s first university was founded. The Ethnology Museum gives an excellent overview of the country's ethnic groups, their customs and ways of life. The highlight here is the large, beautiful outdoor area featuring genuine houses and compounds as built and used by the many different ethnic groups. We visit Hoan Kiem Lake, a meeting place for friends and families in busy Hanoi to see how modern life unfolds in this vibrant city, and then enjoy a performance of Hanoi's famous water puppet theatre before dinner at a local restaurant. After dinner, transfer to the railway station to take the overnight night train to Lao Cai. Accommodation: train - shared 4-berth A/C cabins with soft sleepers, 1 berth per person

Upon arriving at the Lao Cai Railway Station in the early morning, we will be greeted by our driver and transferred to the hotel for breakfast. We freshen up and then drive 8km to reach the entry point of the Lý Lao Cai Elementary School. The school community has eagerly awaiting our arrival and welcome our group with great excitement. A thorough briefing will take place as will a safety talk and you will be introduced to the trained builders and laborers who will be assisting you. You will then be divided into sub groups to work on different components of the project. You will rotate through tasks throughout the day. Wear old clothing and suitable shoes and bring some sturdy work gloves from home. A packed lunch will be supplied by a local restaurant and enjoyed at the project site. It is important that you remain hydrated and regular breaks will be taken to keep energy levels high. The project work KIS students will be involved with over the coming days will leave an immediate and great benefit to the school. Alongside volunteers from the community KIS students will aim to improve one of the classrooms. All materials will be on site ready for our arrival and all local government approvals will have been met and adhered to. Due to strict safety conditions KIS students will not use any power tools, ladders, or access heights / roofs. At the end of the day we return to our hotel in Sa Pa. Accommodation: Sa Pa Charm Hotel

Following breakfast we return to the school to complete the project work. Following lunch we attend the handover ceremony and bid farewell to our new friends. We take and refreshments in a local hotel in Lao Cai before transferring to the train station for the overnight journey from Lao Cai to Hanoi. Accommodation: train - shared 4-berth A/C cabins with soft sleepers, 1 berth per person

Early morning arrival into Hanoi Railway Station where we are collected by our drivers and taken to the hotel for breakfast. The morning is at leisure in Hanoi and do some last minute shopping before transferring to the airport for the flight to South Korea.

  • 03 nights in hotels in Hanoi amd Sa Pa (shared room in twin/double rooms), early check-in on Day 3 in Sa Pa, Hotel day use in Hanoi on Day 6 and refreshments in a local hotel in Lao Cai before the train from Lao Cai to Hanoi on Day 5
  • 02 nights on overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai return to Hanoi (shared 4-berth A/C cabins with soft sleepers, 1 berth per person)
  • All transfers and transportation in air-conditioned private modern coaches (types of vehicles depending on the number of pax)
  • 2 x expert English speaking Vietnamese tour leader who will carry a group medical kit (depending on group size more guides may be allocated to the group)

  • Costs associated with the service learning project. A group donation of USD$4000 has been included in the trip price to cover the costs associated with the project, such as the purchase of all materials and equipment for the project, the costs associated with transporting the materials to the work site as well as the wages of a local skilled trades person to oversee the project work
