Trip Summary

This modern languages trip to the beautiful Pyrenees region of France and Spain takes in some of the Europe's most wild mountainous scenery and most interesting culture. From the modernist architecture and buzzing streets of Barcelona to sleepy shepherd huts in the mountains, and everything in between, this journey will allow your students to practise both their French and Spanish, as well as learn about the subtle linguistic differences in the Catalonia dialect. Over seven days you will explore the history, culture, food, geography and of course languages of the region along with your expert multilingual guide and local team.

Sample Itinerary

THIS IS A SAMPLE ITINERARY THAT CAN BE TAILORED TO THE INDIVIDUAL GOALS, BUDGET AND DATES OF YOUR SCHOOL Upon arrival into the beautiful and world-famous city of Barcelona, capital of the Catalunian region, you will be greeted by our friendly local team. We will take a train northwards out of Spain and into the rocky mountains of the Pyrenees. Formed of gigantic layers of limestone, granite and gneissose rock, the mountains were formed around 100 million years ago and today define the culture and history of the people who live among them. We will arrive into the important town of Perpignan, where our coach will wait to take us to Vernet les Bains. This picturesque town is situated on the side of a mountain, surrounded by forest and rocky ridges. Here we will enjoy dinner together and sample some traditional local food.

This morning after breakfast we will take a coach to the monastery of St Martin du Canigou. Constructed 1000 years ago by Benedictine monks in a Romaneque style, the monastery has been a place of refuge and tranquillity for centuries. Its location is dramatic, and we will enjoy a tour of the monastery to learn about its history and relevance to the local culture. After this interesting morning we will enjoy some lunch together, before taking a coach to the Col de Jou. Here we will put on our hiking boots and trek along a mountain trail to our refuge at Mariailles. We will enjoy dinner here tonight after an afternoon of mountain fresh air!

Continuing our hiking today, we will truly experience the rugged beauty and wild scenery of the Pyrenees. From our refuge we will follow the GR10 trail as well as the HRP (High Pyrenean Trail). The trail passes mountain lakes and forests, and crosses beautiful valley scattered with granite rocks. These mountains are home to bears, lynx and foxes. Although we might not see them, we may be lucky to view wild deer, goats and eagles. We will arrive into our mountain refuge late this afternoon and can relax before dinner.

After breakfast we will enjoy a special journey on le petit train jaune (little yellow train) which travels along small gauge tracks in the mountains. We will get off at the extraordinary UNESCO world heritage site of Mont Louis, a fortified citadel constructed in the 17th Century, its strategic location on the frontier with Spain has made it an important city in the history of the region. We will explore the town and enjoy a guided walk around the ramparts and interesting streets, of the highest fortified town in all of France. After some lunch we will continue hiking along the trail into the mountains, past lakes Pradeilles on the GR10 Trail, and towards our refuge at Bouillouses. We will enjoy some dinner here tonight and relax after another great day of nature, history and hiking in the mountains.

Our final day of hiking might provide some of the most beautiful scenery of the whole trip, as we head towards the mountain of Carlit. Past scattered lakes and copses of woods, our trail will take us through some of southern France’s best terrain for hiking. We will stay tonight in a mountain refuge with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Early this morning we will be collected by a private coach to drive us south through the mountains and down the coast into Barcelona. We will have the day to enjoy the city with our guide, taking in the Parc Guell, Sagrada Famlia, La Pedrera, the Olympic Site, the Cathedral and Las Ramblas. Our tour can be tailored to your group’s desires and wishes. In the later afternoon you can have some free time to explore the centre of the city, before we meet up in a local restaurant to sample some traditional Catalonian cuisine and celebrate our trip in the Pyrenees.
