Trip Summary

The service learning theme for Grade 6 KIS students is 'Environment', and so to reflect this we travel to the Sichuan province of China to learn about the efforts being made protect the Giant Panda and it's habitat. A recognised symbol of China, the Giant Panda is also an endangered animal. With fewer than 1000 left in the wild a visit to Pandas International's Panda Center in Chengdu is a unique opportunity to see these animals in an environment that mimics their natural habitat. The center is leading the world in research into the breeding and release of Pandas in the wild. Each Grade 6 student to visit the Panda Center will leave a lasting impact by way of their physical commitment to the service work and the donation made. Half a day is also spent exploring Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China's Sichuan province, also known for it's relaxed vibe and plenty of green space, ranking Chengdu as one of the most livable cities in China and a full day is spent visiting the Leshan Buddha, the largest and tallest stone Buddha statue in the world.

Our service learning adventures can be undertaken by anyone with a reasonable level of health and fitness. For the service learning part of your trip you will not require a certain level of strength or physical ability, just an enthusiastic and positive attitude.
