Trip Summary

The North East Arnhem Land Coast is one of Australia’s most beautiful coastlines, virtually free from development and enjoying the custodianship of the Yolngu Aboriginal Traditional owners. The Yolngu are known as being one of the first aboriginal peoples in Australia and it’s very likely they have one of the longest running cultures in history. This exclusive school journey will travel to one of the most remote Yolngu Aboriginal communities at Bawaka Homeland where students will be immersed in traditional Yolngu Aboriginal knowledge to get a better understanding of their traditional way of life as well as the land, sea and animals. The school group may break into boys and girls groups to share in the gender-specific aspects of their culture and lifestyle. From language to body painting and dancing, bush medicines to star stories and even spear making and weaving, this is a unique experience that will provide students with a greater appreciation of the way of life of not just the Yolngu people, but all aboriginal cultures in Australia.

Suitability

Our cultural adventures can be undertaken by anyone with a reasonable level of health and fitness. A good level of mobility is required for the many walks. An enthusiastic and positive attitude and an openness to different ways of living is also important.
